On June 9 Italy marks the day of reverence to Vesta, an ancient Roman goddess of hearth, home and family.
Today Italian women go on a barefoot pilgrimage to the goddess temple where they leave gifts of food and flowers. Also this day it is forbidden to use donkeys for chores as according to legend the braying a warning of this animal saved Vesta from danger.
