On June 10 the Japanese observe the Memorial Day of Time. According to legend it was on this day in 671, when the first clock appeared in palace of the Japanese Emperor.

The Babylonians began to count the passage of time: 3.5 thousand years ago they invented a sundial. They fixed small rod on flat stone with marks, the shadow of rod served as a clock hand. At night one could know the time thanks to the water clocks called clepsydra by the Greeks. In Europe and China there was a fire watch – candles notches on which showed time while they were melting.
About a thousand years ago the first hourglass came to usage. But this sand indicator became relatively accurate only with the development of glass-mastery, and it counted the small intervals of not more than half an hour.
