On June 26 one of the most beautiful states of our planet – Madagascar – celebrates its Independence Day.
Before1960 Madagascar was a French colony. However, abuse of the local population by colonialists led to a national revolt and the independence war. France was forced to hold democratic election, as a result the country gained independence and Social Democrats led by Philibert Tsiranana came to power. However he failed to keep power for long and again mass revolts burst out in the country and lasted for several decades.
In 2002 the head of state was successful industrialist Marc Ravalomanana. He introduced a number of important economic and political reforms and initiated active fight against corruption in the country.
Madagascar residents are very religious and public holidays are not marked in a big way. Most of the population professes a local religion which is based on the connection between alive and dead. 40% of the population are Christians of the Roman Catholic Church. Interestingly, the majority of people try to combine both religions.
On the island there are about 12 000 species of animals and plants more than 10 000 of which are unique. Only here you can find a huge ferns and palm trees, amazing desert plants and such incredible animals as endangered lemurs, 90% of their natural habitat was destroyed by unfavourable natural conditions and humans.
Today Madagascar is the world's largest producer and exporter of vanilla.
