The world's first tram went into service in Germany

Автор: 16.05.2014 | Germany, history, tram
On May 16, 1881 the world's first public electric tramway was put into operation in Berlin.

In the late 19th century the population of the German capital exceeded one million and due to that traffic in the city centre was severely hampered. To solve this problem somehow engineer Werner von Siemens presented at the Berlin Exhibition the world's first electric tramcar with three carriages which was moving at a speed of 7 kilometres per hour and could accommodate 18 passengers.

Many visitors expressed a desire to have a trip in this mini-train which was moving without steam and horses, but by closure of the exhibition population still remained wary of this innovation. To prove the viability of this means of transport, Siemens had to invest his own funds into construction of an electric tram demonstration model, and rolled it out to the streets.

So, on May 16, 1881 on Berlin outskirts the world's first tramway went on its first-ever trip. Little tramway moving at a speed of 30 kilometres per hour carried more than 12 000 passengers for three months.
