Today on June 2 in China starts Dragon Boat Festival or Duanwu as it is called by the locals.
The festival is dedicated to the Dragon – an oriental symbol of the earth and air elements. Arranging a celebration in honour of this mighty creature, the Chinese sought to stave off disasters such as rainstorms and floods.
This day is famous for races on the so-called dragon boats. The competition is organized by the International Dragon Boat Federation which also supervises observance of rules. Through efforts of the Federation the competition has recently become popular not only in China but also in many other countries. The second important event is held in the evening when the river welcomes parade of boats decorated with colourful lanterns.
Apart from these activities the Chinese also arrange ducks chase. It is believed that people who managed to catch a bird attract good luck.
A traditional Duanwu dish is zongzi – a steamed meal made of glutinous rice wrapped with reed, bamboo or palm leaves and tied with coloured silk threads. The delicacy is stuffed with dates, mashed beans, meat, sausage, egg yolk.
Children are bestowed with pouches of fragrant vulnerary herbs. The pouches are made of colourful silk fabric and tired with five-colour silk thread. Often these bags are used as decoration.
