This date was established in 1972 at the Stockholm Conference. It is designed to draw wide public attention to environmental issues.
This day was also adopted a declaration containing 26 principles which should guide all states in their activities. Each principle is aimed at conservation and sustainable use of nature resources. The declaration was the first document to set forth that protection and improvement of the environment for present and future generations is paramount assignment for mankind.
World Environment Day is accompanied by colourful performances: street rallies, bicycles parades, "green" concerts, essay and poster competitions in schools, tree planting, as well as the campaign for the wastes recycling and territory clean-up.
