The Sun Coffee Day in Iceland

In Iceland there is such an unusual holiday as the Sun Coffee Day.

In winter period many regions of the mentioned country are immersed into the pitch darkness not only because of the state’s close location to polar circle but also due to the mountain landscape.

That is why in various valleys appearance of the first sunrays behind the hill has always been perceived as prelude of true spring, as its golden labarum.

Local citizens gathered in the place of appointment, trying to make crapes, brew and drink coffee looking how the naughty sun was dipping below the hills again. Fun went on also after the sunset and was renewed at the first sights of new sun appearance before the moment its light became commonness.

In spite of remoteness of Iceland from coffee-producing countries, hot eye-opening beverage appeared in 1772 and already carried everything before the Icelanders.

The date of celebration, certainly, depends on the occurrence of sun in specific district; however, in the large communities date is considered as averaged and fixed. Today, for instance, we have a reason to take a cup of tea or other favorite beverage to citizens of Reykjavik waiting for their sun – we will do it with pleasure, marking the morning with the cup of refreshing drink.

Currently the holiday of coffee in Reykjavik is not coincided with rare fine days. There is a special day now, the 27-th of January when Icelanders celebrate a marvelous holiday, imagine different coffee surprises, for example, unexpectedly bring hot coffee at work of their relatives and dear people. Alternatively, dwellers may simply attend coffee-rooms which try to knock spots off each other in originality of thematic offerings.

There is one more tradition worth mentioning – this day crapes and national Icelandic journey-cakes with pieces of smoked lamb are cooked.
