On May 15 the former Japan capital city of Kyoto features one of the most important Shintō festivals Aoi Matsuri or Hollyhock Festival.
History of celebration dates back to the Heian period. According to legend, tired of the constant flooding and showers the Japanese turned to the gods for help and brought leaves of Aoi Hollyhock as a gift. Rains stopped, the people returned to normal, and the flower got attributed with miraculous properties – to prevent natural disasters.
Nowadays festival in Kyoto is remarkable for its grandiose parade, which begins at the southern gate of the Imperial Palace and goes along the Kamo-gawa River. The procession is attended by about 500 people dressed in costumes of the Japanese aristocracy.
Procession is led by a rider on a richly decorated horse. Passers-by meet all participants with special obeisance. Festive event is accompanied by folk songs and dance tunes called Azuma asobi.
