World Oceans Day
his date is intended to remind people of necessity to preserve nature, to take care of marine flora and fauna that will help reduce the extinction of many species of aquatic plants and animals.
Over 70% of the Earth's surface is covered with the World Ocean. Scientists divide it into Atlantic, Indian, Pacific and the Arctic Oceans.
The role of the oceans in climate regulation is vital as their water is one of the main absorbents of carbon dioxide. However, nowadays the variety of species inhabiting the oceans is under threat.
The UN reports that by 2050 the acidity of the World Ocean will raise by 150% which is 100 times faster than any other changes that marine environment went through over the last 20 million years. Also, according to forecasts, by 2100 about 70% of the corals will be destroyed, and corals are key ecosystem for most game fish. Serious damage to ocean ecosystem can be prevented only by a rapid decline in global CO2 emissions.
Numerous events are arranged around the world to mark World Oceans Day: sea-themed festivals and parades, exhibitions, environmental demonstrations and other special events. Residents of different countries are explained what they can do to protect the oceans.
