On June 8 Venice will host the Vogalonga Regatt, which according to its organizers is an act of expressing their love for the city, its canals and lagoons.
Originally the Vogalonga was born as a protest against the growing use of powerboats that are believed to damage the historic city. Now it is an international event involving both amateur and professional rowers. The route covers the canals of Venice, mostly those nearby historical and cultural attractions.
Variety of vehicles is amazing ranging from classic gondolas and ending with dragon boats. Some participants have also chosen to swim through the route instead of rowing. Every year the regatta is attended by more than 6 000 participants on 1 650 boats.
