On June 14, the Americans celebrate National Flag Day.
The star-spangled banner appeared in 1777, in the midst of the war for independence. That's when the Continental Congress adopted it as the official flag of all the free states of America.
Festival dedicated to the state symbol was established after more than hundred years when schoolteacher Bernard J. Cigrand organized it for his pupils. In subsequent years, in numerous magazine articles and personal letters Cigrand enthusiastically promoted the observance of June 14 as Flag Day.
Officially, however, it was approved only in 1949, when President Truman signed a corresponding legislation.
Many people in the United States honour this day by displaying the American flag at homes. This holiday many patriotic speeches are pronounced and songs performed, and everywhere an American flag is a hero of celebrations. It symbolizes the unity of all states (number of stars) and reminds about the Independence War (the number of stripes on the flag mean the 13 states that decided to declare independence from England back in the 18th century).
