Anniversary of the Chernobyl disaster
Approximately at 01:24 on the fourth reactor of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant there was an explosion. According to experts, the accident occurred due to an attempt to make an experiment to remove additional energy during the operation of the main nuclear reactor.
Unthinkable amount of radioactive substances was in the air. In some places, the level of radiation pollution is thousands of times higher than the standard background. The total area of radioactive contamination was 50 thousand square kilometers.
Immediately after the disaster, 31 people died, and 600,000 liquidators who took part in extinguishing fires and clearing received high doses of radiation. In just two decades, almost 18,000 people, including children, died from the consequences of the accident.
According to the international 8-level nuclear event scale, the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant is rated at level 7, and an accident at the Japanese nuclear power plant Fukushima, which occurred in 2011, is estimated at the same level.
