The remains of Gabriel Garcia Marquez have been buried at the motherland

The remains of Columbian laureate of Nobel Prize for literature Gabriel Garcia Marquez were buried in the repository of University of Cartagena. They had been moved from Mexico where the writer died two years ago at the age of 87.

The former Catholic cathedral La Merced is now a part of university space. Not far away from this place there is a family house of Marquez, one of the leaders of magic realism in literature which is about to become his museum.

At the funerals of the author of ‘One Hundred Years of Solitude’ and ‘Love in the Times of Cholera’ nearly 400 guests were present including the president of Columbia Juan Manuel Santos. The writer had spent a big part of his life in Cartagena.

The future author of ‘One Hundred Years of Solitude’ came to the city firstly in 1948 so as to become a journalist in the local newspaper.

The action of one of its most famous novels, ‘Love in the Times of Cholera’ happens in this Columbian port, as well

Marquez died in April, 2014 in Mexico. In the closing stages of life the writers rarely appeared in public.
