From April to July Florence is a venue for the oldest and the most important festival in Europe called Florence May Music Festival.
This festival of opera and symphonic music has been welcomed in Italy since 1933. Its founders were conductors Vittorio Gui and Alessandro Pavolini.
For the opening ceremony of the first season was chosen Giuseppe Verdi opera Nabucco which was staged extremely rarely. In such a way Gui designated purpose of the festival that is to revive the forgotten or little-known works of talented composers and attract world's attention to modern opera. The energetic and decisive conductor captured the best representatives of music elite with his idea and managed to realize his dream.
All major presentations of the festival are hosted by the Teatro Communale, the Teatro Piccolo and the historic Teatro della Pergola. However, in 1993 festival’s head and honorary conductor Zubin Mehta established a new tradition – he conducted an open air concert in the Piazza della Signoria. So he demonstrated to the whole world his solidarity to the victims of the terrorist attack in the Uffizi Gallery. Since then open-air concerts are repeated annually.
Each year the organizers invest in their offspring so much effort and ingenuity that it has become one of the greatest sights of Florence. In the current 2014 this marathon of music and dance in Italy is scheduled to run until July 21.
