On May 20, 1570 was published prototype of atlas composed by Irish cartographer Abraham Ortelius.
The first copy has 53 large maps with detailed explanatory scientific texts. It had a name Theatrum Orbis Terrarum (Latin for Theatre of the World) and reflected geographical knowledge of that time.
Over time the atlas was repeatedly supplemented, republished and became a sort of Bible for sailors of late XVI – early XVII centuries. The book played a crucial role in the development of cartography.
Ortelius is also credited for the first detailed map of the Pacific Ocean.
