On May 30, 1631 in Paris, was released the first issue of the publication La Gazette. Since then everyday vocabulary of the French and all the inhabitants of the planet was enriched by the word gazette.
It was published by the nobleman Théophraste Renaudot who received a patent to spread news in the territory of France. The term derived from the name of the petty Italian coin – gazetta which was paid in Venice in the 16th century for handwritten newssheets.
Renaudot also can be credited as the first advertiser, since pages of his tabloid were featured with paid private ads.
Circulations of 1 200 copies was huge for that time. The edition was divided into two parts: information and entertainment, also it contained regular columns. In the first releases Renaudot published articles of foreign authors.
Renaudot’s career developed successfully and several authoritative French publications passed on to his hands. However, the reputation of the editor was not the best: very often he was accused of involvement and influence from Cardinal Richelieu who used the media to promote the absolute monarchy. King and Cardinal supervised all news relating to military action and politics.
