International Day against Nuclear Tests was approved at the 64th session of the UN General Assembly, which took place on December 2, 2009.
This observation is designed to enhance the efforts of the UN, states, intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations in the cessation of nuclear tests. This is a necessary condition for the creation of a safer world.
In May 2010 all states participants of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons pledged to cooperate in order to seek for security in a world free of nuclear weapons, and recognized prohibition on nuclear testing as "the vital task."
Now, according to the UN, it is time for countries which have not signed or ratified the Treaty yet, to enter the agreement as soon as possible. Currently, the entire southern hemisphere of the planet has almost become a zone free of nuclear weapons under regional agreements: the Treaty of Rarotonga, covering the southern part of the Pacific Ocean; the Treaty of Pelindaba for protection of Africa; the Treaty of Bangkok applied in South Asia, and the Treaty of Tlatelolco valid for Latin America and the Caribbean.
