Annualy International day of mosquito is celebrated on the 20-th of August upon an initiative of Sir Ronald Ross, Indian doctor and parasitologist of Scotish origin, who discovered that the carriers of malaria are mosquito females from a kind of Anopheles.
Ross started the investigation of causes of malaria's occurrence because of dissemination of this illness in India. In 1897 he showed by experience that malaria is transmitted at gnat sting. This disclosure made him a Nobel prize winner for physiology and medicine. In commemoration of his find, the scientist offered to celebrate International day of mosquito per annum.
The main task of this day is to increase social awareness on malaria and methods of protective treatment. Year over year world is attacked with 350-500 mln cases of malaria contamination, 1,3-3 mln of which ends up with fatality. The greatest expansion of this illness is stated in equatorial and sub-equatorial zones. Malaria vaccine does not exist yet, however, it is being developed to confront the virus.
