The First Oscar Awards Ceremony
Prior to the ceremony the head of the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer studio Louis Meyer founded the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, members of which until today authoritatively elect future winners. As the best film of the year was recognized Wings directed by William A. Wellman and Harry d'Abbadie d'Arrast. Oscar debut did not do without a scandal. Winner in the category Best Actress was the actress Mary Pickford for the film Coquette, which was seen then by just a few people. This event was an absolute disappointment and created a big buzz among critics. Many talked that Pickford won only due to the fact that she held the status of the silent film star. Other nominees, in their opinion, were much more worthy. The first broadcast of the ceremony was dome through radio, and starting from 1953 - via television. Today Oscar goes live in dozens of countries.
Oscars are awarded upon the results of voting by members of the Academy in number of a bit more than 10 thousand people, and not under jury choice. The golden man is 34 cm high and weighs nearly 4 kg. It is made of britannium and fastened on a black marble pedestal. According to legend, the image creator Cedric Gibbons drew a sketch of a knight with a sword standing on a reel tape in his notebook during one of boring meetings.
