On May 19, 1908 in Paris at the Grand Opera Theatre first was presented Modest Mussorgsky opera Boris Godunov with Feodor Chaliapin in the title role.

The organizer of Russian Seasons in Paris Sergei Diaghilev spent much time and effort on staging the opera: he wanted Paris to see a genuine Russ of late 16th and early 17th centuries, and for that he travelled all over the country collecting real peasant gowns, vintage beads and embroidery. Later, Diaghilev granted all his presentation to the French Opera.

Feodor Chaliapin, who was equally fantastic in singing and acting, dazzled the French audience. In fact, with this opera, the singer became the favourite of Europe and then of the United States.

After the stunning success of the opera, the next year Diaghilev brought ballet to Paris. Russian Seasons remained a significant event in the cultural life of Europe right up to the point when in 1929 Sergei Diaghilev died from the effects of diabetes.
