On May 22 Yemen celebrates the Day of National Unity. This holiday was proclaimed in honour of unification of South and North Yemen in a single state.
This event occurred in 1990, before that the countries were hostile to each other, waged wars and fought for independence on their own.
Today Yemen is one of the poorest Arab countries. According to GDP per capita the state occupies 173rd place in the world, which is just a bit better than Sudan and Mauritania. Yemen's economic welfare depends on oil production and export, though oil deposits are declining.
