Christopher Columbus discovered the Treasure Island (Juventud)
There are many legends about the treasures stored in this small piece of land in the Caribbean. They are all based on the fact that for more than 300 years pirates considered it their home. Here they repaired ships and stocked with food and water.
Treasures hunters claim that chests with gold and jewel do exist, especially after the fact that in 1954 American Ted Wicker, after much searching and numerous attempts, finally found jewels there. The rest of treasures hunters failed to find anything.
Today the island has an actively thriving tourism industry. There are hotels, developed infrastructure, as well as an international airport, so it is not difficult for anyone to get to the mysterious Juventud. Along all the benefits, the natural resources of the island are preserved in their almost original form.
There is a black Bibijagua beach on the Isla de la Juventud. The sand here is blackened by the erosive effects of the sea on the basalt rocks. Those who want to enjoy the flora and fauna can go to the national park Los Indios-San Felipe. The island's capital – the city of Nueva Gerona – is famous for the Presidio Modelo prison. There were jailed the most egregious offenders of Cuba, as well as revolutionaries including Fidel Castro.
