On May 28 Azerbaijan celebrates national holiday dedicated to the Declaration of Independence signed in 1918.
This event marked the appearance of the first secular democratic state in the Islamic East, but it existed for not longer than two years.
From 1922 to 1991 Azerbaijan was a part of the Soviet Union, after its collapse the country revived this holiday and celebrates it at the state level.
