Picture of Paul Gauguin «Nafee Faa Ipoipo» («When to get married?») was sold for record $300 million, as it is written by The New York Times as referred to in European and American sources.
According to the edition’s information, it is the highest price ever paid for the treasures of art. In the picture dated with 1892, two Tahitians are depicted. Painting belonged to the private collector and ex-employer of Sotheby’s from Switzerland Rudolph Stehelin. 62-year-old Stehelin confirmed the fact of picture’s sales.
Two art-dealers stated organization Qatar Museums bought Gauguin’s picture. Stehelin did not deny it, however, did not acknowledge it. He refused to talk about the price of picture. In Qatar Museums, spokespeople did not answer at the enquiry of comment. As Stehelin tells, a new owner of picture is taking over it the next January.
Gauguin’s painting could be seen in Basel at the exhibition opened in February and dedicated to the mentioned painter. Then collection will be sent to Madrid and Washington.
The previous record-holder was the picture of Paul Cezanne «The Card Players». According to non-official data, Qatar paid $250 million in 2011.
